Repair guides, torque specs and fluid capacities for the 4.0L inline six, with every fact checked against two independent sources, one of them always the workshop manual.
A 4.0L Cherokee XJ takes 6.0 quarts (5.7 L) of engine oil with a filter change, and its cooling system holds 12 quarts (11.4 L), including 1.0 qt in the recovery bottle [1][4][5]. For an AW4 fluid and filter change, the factory manual says to add 2 quarts and then fill to the dipstick [2][5]. The Dana 30 front axle takes 3.13 pt (1.48 L)[1][3][9][10][11]; the NP231 transfer case takes 2.2 pt (1.0 L) on 1994–95 trucks and about 2.5 pt (1.2 L) on 1997–2001 trucks [2][4][9][10][11].
Every value below was checked against the factory service manual and at least one independent source (a different publication, not a copy of the same table). Rows that pass are marked Verified. Rows that don’t are in a separate table with the reason shown. The factory manuals we have are for 1994, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2001. We have no factory manual for 1984–93, so for those years the “applies to” column says where the third-party 1984–88 and 1989–95 service data agrees. Where a capacity changed between years, the row is split by year.
The same manual says Mopar Dexron II may be used only if Mercon is unavailable. Its specification table says "Jeep automatic transmission fluid or Dexron II". ExtremeTerrain lists ATF+4, which is not confirmed here. Earlier years are not covered.
The Group 0 summary table in the same manuals still prints 2.2 pt (1.0 L), unchanged from 1994–95. The transfer case chapter changed from 2.2 pt (1.04 L) in 1995 to 2.5 pt (1.2 L) in 1997, and the independent 2001 data agrees with 2.5 pt. Either way, fill to the bottom of the fill-plug hole. ExtremeTerrain's 1.6 qt is not supported by any other source.
1997, 1999 and 2000 factory manuals, Group 21 transfer case chapter; 2001 data (1.25 qt)
The 1989–95 data gives 3.0 pt (1.4 L), the 1984–88 data gives 2.5 pt for 1987, and ExtremeTerrain gives 1.1 qt. These are not verified for pre-1997 trucks.
1997–2001 (factory manual Group 21; Group 0 rounds to 2.7 pt (1.3 L); 2001 data 1.43 qt = 2.86 pt)
Front axle, Dana 30 (Chrysler "181 FBI"), non-disconnect
3.13 pt (1.48 L)
"181 FBI" is Chrysler's name for the Dana 30 (181 mm ring gear). Only one paragraph in the 2000 and 2001 Group 3 text says 2.5 pt (1.2 L), which is the 186 FBI figure printed beside it; the specification tables in that same chapter say 3.13 pt (1.48 L). ExtremeTerrain repeats 2.5 pt (1.2 L). Fill to the bottom of the fill-plug hole.
Specification tables of the 1994, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2001 factory manuals; 1989–95 data (Selec-Trac, non-disconnect); 2001 data (1.6 qt)
The 1994 table gives one XJ figure under "front/rear axles"; its Group 2 gives the front axle separately as 3.13 pt (1.48 L), so the 2.5 pt is the rear figure. From 1995 the factory manual lists the Model 35 (194 RBI) at 3.4 pt (1.6 L).
1994 factory manual Group 0 table; the 1989–95 data gives 2.5 pt for 1989–94
Not yet verified: conflicts and single-source values
Don’t rely on a number from this table without checking it on the truck. For the axles, the factory manual says to fill to the bottom of the fill-plug hole rather than by a measured amount.[3]
Jeep Cherokee XJ fluid capacities (4.0L), not yet verified
Front axle, Dana 30 with vacuum disconnect (Command-Trac, to about 1995)
3.13 pt (1.48 L) or 3.5 pt (1.65 L), plus 5 oz (148 ml) in the shift-motor housing
Why not verified: The 1989–95 data gives 3.76 pt (1.65 L) for the XJ Command-Trac disconnect axle, and the 1995 factory text gives 3.5 pt (1.65 L) for "vacuum-disconnect type" Model 30 axles. But the 1994 factory table gives the XJ 3.13 pt (1.48 L), plus 5 oz for Command-Trac, and reserves 3.5 pt (1.65 L) for the YJ. All three agree on the extra 5 oz in the shift-motor housing. The 1989–95 data prints 1.65 L as 3.76 pt, but 1.65 L is 3.5 pt (3.76 pt would be 1.78 L), so treat the liter figure as the reference.
Why not verified: Only the 1984–96 third-party data series gives this for these years. No factory manual for 1984–93 has been found (the 1994 factory figure is the same).
Why not verified: ExtremeTerrain only (Morris 4x4 republishes the same table). The 1984–88 data gives a single 2.5 pt rear-axle figure and does not list the Dana 44 separately. No factory source has been found.
Why not verified: ExtremeTerrain gives 2.5 qt. The 1988 third-party service data gives 3.5 pt (1.6 L) in three separate tables. No factory figure has been found; the 1984–88 maintenance table does not list the BA-10/5. Fill to the bottom of the fill-plug hole.
NP231 transfer case. The Group 0 summary table says 2.2 pt (1.0 L) in every edition from 1994 to 2001.[1][4][9][10][11][12] The Group 21 transfer case chapter agrees for 1994–95 (2.2 pt, 1.04 L) but says 2.5 pt (1.2 L) from 1997.[2][4][9][10][11] The 2001 data also says about 2.5 pt (1.25 qt),[7] so we split the row by year and use the transfer case chapter.
Dana 30 (181 FBI) front axle. Every specification table from 1994 to 2001 says 3.13 pt (1.48 L).[1][3][4][9][10][11][12] One paragraph of the 2000–01 Group 3 text says 2.5 pt (1.2 L), the figure printed beside it for the 186 FBI axle.[3]
AW4 dry fill. The 2000 Group 0 table says 16.5 pt (7.8 L);[1] the Group 21 specification says 8.45 qt (8.0 L), which the 1995 Group 0 table, the 1984–96 data and ExtremeTerrain also give.[2][10][5][6][8]
