Repair guides, torque specs and fluid capacities for the 4.0L inline six, with every fact checked against two independent sources, one of them always the workshop manual.

About Inline 242

Inline 242 is an independent reference for the 4.0L inline-six Jeeps: mainly the 1984–2001 Cherokee (XJ), plus the Comanche (MJ), Wrangler (YJ, TJ) and Grand Cherokee (ZJ) where parts and procedures overlap. The name comes from the engine’s displacement, 242 cubic inches.

Who’s behind it

I’m Dario Paolini, a home mechanic based in Brisbane, Australia, with a passion for keeping cars that often end up on the scrap heap on the road. They don’t make cars like they used to, and the XJ, with its 4.0L inline six, is a prime example. I buy cars destined for the scrap yard and give them a new lease on life.

Finding the right information takes so much time. I’ve been through the process myself: Google searches, online forums, AI chats, workshop manuals. It’s painstaking. I built Inline 242 to bring the right information into one place, so you don’t have to do the searching, and more classics get the love they deserve.

With the right information, a lot of passion and a bit of hard work, anyone can do it.

How the information is checked

Every spec, part number and procedure is drawn from factory service manuals and cross-checked against independent sources. Each source is cited on the page, and I review every page before it’s published. Where sources disagree, the page says so instead of guessing. Each page shows which model years it covers and when it was last verified. The short version of the labels is on How we verify.

What we are not

We are not a dealer, a parts seller or affiliated with the vehicle manufacturer. See the editorial & sourcing policy and the affiliate disclosure.

Verified. Two independent sources agree, and one of them is factory data.

Single source. Only one source gives this figure.

Not yet verified. It has not been checked against that rule yet.

Sources conflict. The sources do not agree, so both figures are shown.

2 catalogs. Two independent catalogs agree on an aftermarket number. Factory catalogs do not list those.

Every published fact needs two independent sources, one of them factory data. Anything short of that is flagged.
